Bayern Open the Season Against the One Side to Beat Them
The Bundesliga’s 2026⁄27 season begins under the Allianz Arena lights on Friday night, and the fixture computer handed Bayern the one visitor who has actually beaten them in this run of meetings. Nine matches make up Matchday 1; this is the first of them, so whatever happens in Munich sets the number every other club spends the weekend chasing. Stuttgart arrive at a ground where, across the last four visits in this sample, they have not won.
The State of FC Bayern München
No competitive football has been played yet this season, so there is no form line to read — only the shape of the squad and what it has done to this opponent before. Bayern have scored in all eight of the last eight meetings between these clubs and hit three or more in five of them, a pattern that says less about any single striker than about the way this team suffocates the opposition half and turns possession into repeated arrivals in the box.
The registered squad tells you where the identity comes from. Joshua Kimmich remains the pivot the whole structure rotates around: he sets the tempo, drops between or beside the centre-backs to start the build, and is the player Stuttgart must find a way to press without leaving their own midfield stretched. Behind him, Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano give Bayern the defensive line height to squeeze forty metres up the pitch, with Min-Jae Kim and Hiroki Ito as alternatives depending on how much recovery pace Vincent Kompany wants against a counter-attacking side. Konrad Laimer’s value in this system is the unglamorous kind — the second-ball hoovering and immediate counter-press that lets Bayern keep the ball pinned in the opposition third.
The width is where the danger concentrates. Alphonso Davies attacking the outside of a back four, with Josip Stanišić or Sacha Boey providing balance on the opposite flank, gives Bayern a first-phase route past any mid-block. And Manuel Neuer, still the last line, remains a sweeper-keeper who lets that high line exist at all.
The State of VfB Stuttgart
Stuttgart also start the campaign with a blank sheet — no completed fixtures, no form to cite. What is knowable is the profile of the group Sebastian Hoeneß brings to Munich, and it is heavily weighted toward defensive personnel: Dan-Axel Zagadou, Julian Chabot, Ameen Al Dakhil, Luca Jaquez, Ramon Hendriks, Finn Jeltsch and Leonidas Stergiou give the coaching staff an unusual number of ways to build a back line, including the option of a back three that turns into a back five when Bayern have the ball.
The full-back positions carry the plan. Maximilian Mittelstädt on the left and Lorenz Assignon or Josha Vagnoman on the right are the players who have to do two jobs on Friday — pin themselves back against Bayern’s wingers, then be the outlet the moment possession turns over. Stuttgart’s route to a result at the Allianz Arena has always run through transition rather than territory, and it needs full-backs willing to sprint sixty metres in the direction they have just spent ten minutes retreating from.
In goal, Fabian Bredlow, Stefan Drljača and Dennis Seimen are the options, and whoever starts is going to be busy. This is a squad list weighted toward keeping the game at 0-0 for as long as possible, which, given the goal totals in this fixture, is a reasonable ambition rather than a modest one.
Head-to-Head
Eight meetings, and Bayern have won six, Stuttgart one, with a single draw. More striking than the win column is the volume: not one of those eight matches finished with two goals or fewer in total. Bayern have found the net in every single one.
The most recent came on 19 April 2026 at the Allianz Arena, Bayern winning 4-2 — Stuttgart’s two goals there being the sort of detail worth holding on to, because it was the first time in this sample they had scored more than once against Bayern since their win. Before that, 6 December 2025 produced the widest margin in the whole set: Stuttgart 0-5 Bayern, at Stuttgart’s own ground.
The exception is 4 May 2024, when Stuttgart beat Bayern 3-1 at home. It is the only Stuttgart win in eight, and it is not repeatable on Friday because it happened in Stuttgart. At the Allianz Arena across these four meetings, Stuttgart have won none, drawn one — the 2-2 on 10 September 2022 — and lost three.
👀 What to Watch
The first structural question is what Stuttgart do about Kimmich. Press him with a lone forward and he simply passes around the pressure; commit a midfielder to him and Bayern’s wingers get isolation one-on-one against the full-backs, which is exactly the situation Davies is built to punish. Hoeneß’s likeliest compromise is a compact mid-block that concedes the ball in front of the defence and refuses to be pulled apart sideways — but that requires Zagadou and whoever partners him to defend crosses for ninety minutes without a lapse.
The second is whether Stuttgart can turn defensive solidity into anything at the other end. Their squad’s depth is at centre-back; the outlet has to be Mittelstädt and Assignon breaking on the counter, and both must pick the exact moments to go. Against Bayern’s counter-press, a full-back who commits forward at the wrong moment leaves the space that turns a 1-0 into a 3-0.
🔮 Prediction
Our model gives FC Bayern München a 73% chance of winning, with the draw at 19% and VfB Stuttgart at 8%, on projected xG of 2.0–0.5. The model puts both teams scoring at 34% and over 2.5 goals at 46%, which is the one number worth arguing with: every one of the last eight meetings has produced at least three goals, so the model’s read here is more conservative than the head-to-head sample suggests. The case for it is that Stuttgart’s registered squad is stacked with defenders and their opening-day plan is likely to be containment first.
The rest follows from the venue record — three Bayern wins and a draw from four Allianz Arena meetings in this sample, no Stuttgart win — and from Bayern scoring in all eight. Most likely exact scores are 2-0 at 16.5%, 1-0 at 16.1% and 3-0 at 11.0%, all of them clean sheets, which is the model telling you it expects Stuttgart to be pinned rather than beaten in a shootout. These are model projections — not betting advice. Wager responsibly.
